(Features) “Dan Johns” Conversation with Zillz!

Posted in Features on July 28, 2008 by Steelz

Everyday, it seems Zillz and I have these impromptu heavy convo’s about different things, and he asked me about posting the following on the Little Brother Fansite.

zillz: I got a question to ask you about the hip-hop game that i might wanna put on the LB Fansite.
Dan Johns: Okay.

zillz: Given the technologies and avenues that we are afforded today, where do you see promotion and sales going to in the future?
Dan Johns: CD sales are going to go the way of the cassette tape in the 90’s…and I’m not sure if mp3 sales will rise enough to compensate for the drop off. Artists are being forced to use their music and free releases to create a buzz for tours. I see music being more of a bargaining chip to open other doors. I don’t know what will be tomorrow’s “ringtone,” but musicians are going to rely more on live shows and other avenues to get money.

zillz: Making true money off of cds is pretty much dead and really just an official promotional tool now. Where does that leave the musician? Suppose there’s no other avenue they’re interested in…are they stuck?
Dan Johns: your last 2 questions are the reason that most musicians keep their day-job and make music as a second full-time job so, yeah, in some ways they are stuck. WE are stuck.

zillz: If you had to guess, where’s the win for the musician?
Dan Johns: Tightening up the live performance, working hard to keep new material coming out, and trying to find a unique connection with the fans.

zillz: How do you feel about the internet’s role in the landscape of music now.
Dan Johns: It’s a tremendous tool, as well as a tremendous hindrance all at once. The net is responsible for “shrinking” the world so that artists can reach like-minded fans worldwide. But the consequence is how easy the net makes it to find albums without purchasing them. the ease of finding new music decreases the “shelf live of every release. one release a year isn’t acceptable b/c the landscape is so flooded but at the same time, the net is the only solution to the problems that it has caused. Crazy, I know.

Interview: Jay-Z: The Prelude

Posted in Features with tags on January 5, 2008 by Steelz

A little over a decade ago, the youth group I was involved in was propositioned to promote a show in my hometown of Las Vegas featuring a fresh new artist from New York. Not many of my 15-17 year old peers knew much about this guy from Marcy Projects – but I did. I had followed him since his features on “The Originators” with Jaz-O, Big L’s “The Graveyard” and Mic Geronimo’s “Time To Build” thanks to the numerous mixtapes my uncle lugged back with him from his trips to Vegas from New York. When his cassette maxi-single (remember those?) dropped, I was pretty pissed it cost four bucks (that was my damn lunch money for the day) but because it featured “Dead Presidents” b/w “Ain’t No Nigga,” I coughed up the dough and played that bitch until the words disappeared and the little sponge thing where the tape was at broke off.

New Joe Budden Interview!!! Announces New Album Padded Room!!

Joe Budden

Beef and mixtapes. If you’re a rapper having label problems, keep those two close by and the people will remember your name. Jersey City emcee Joe Budden has been armed with both since releasing a self-titled debut in 2003. His sophomore album, The Growth, has supposedly been ready to drop for over four years, but creative differences with Def Jam has kept it on the shelf. During his, the Internet-savvy Budden has gained legions of die-hard fans with his critically acclaimed Mood Muzik mixtape series, and has kept the streets talking by feuding with Saigon and former friends like Ransom. His patience and grind paid off. Budden was finally released from his Def Jam contract this past October – and he’s wasting no time. The recently released Mood Muzik 3: For Better or for Worse has already sparked speculation that some bars are aimed at his former label boss, Jay-Z. Rhapsody spoke with Budden about his harsh words for the God MC, where he might be signing next, and whether 2007 was a good year for hip-hop.
